WORTH runs a Government recognized residential Transitional School for Children
with Speech and Hearing Impairments, in its campus at Katpadi. Children seeking
admission in this school are first screened through an audiogram to assess the severity
of their impairment. Suitable hearing aids are obtained for the children through
a Government programme, administered by the District Disability Rehabilitation Officer.
The Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore also comes forward to donate these
devices. The age group of children admitted to the school is from 4 years to 10.
The children join different classes according to their age and undergo studies upto
3rd standard. There after they are integrated into regular schools. There are trained
and dedicated teachers on hand to teach the children, the required skills of speech
and lip reading. The academics are in line with a Government approved curriculum
for such children.
Many of the children come from villages spread out in the region and they stay
in a hostel provided inside the campus. This facilitates the teaching of daily living
skills. The children are also encouraged to take an active part in cultural activities
and they enjoy participating and winning prizes in various competitions held in
connection with special days such as World Disabled Day, Integrated Children's Day
and Independence Day. Voluntary organizations like the Round Table also organizes
periodic events for the benefit of these children.
WORTH is currently engaged in a campaign for early identification of disabilities
with a view to benefiting more children in need of such special school facilities.
It is also our vision to see more and more children staying at home with their parents
and siblings leading a normal integrated home life; and when it is time for school
WORTH 's transport will be available to ferry them to school and back at the end
of the day, just like every other child!
